2026/02 KAUST–Tongji University Exchange

26 February, 2026

Professor Shuyu Sun from Tongji University recently visited King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) as a guest of Professor Bicheng Yan and the Deep Geoenergy Engineering and Modeling (DGyM) research group. The visit was aimed at strengthening the collaboration between the two institutions, and Professor Sun participated in academic and research activities with many KAUST faculty colleagues, featured two key academic activities below,

  • Joint Research Meeting (February 25, 2026): Professor Yan convened a meeting with Professor Sun and his students, Qi Zhang and Aofeng Qiao. DGyM members (Haotian Li, Qirun Fu, Billal Aslam, Remya Nair) presented their latest research on deep learning for pore-scale simulation, uncertainty quantification, multiscale simulation, and quantum chemistry. In turn, Qi Zhang and Aofeng Qiao presented their work on hydraulic fracturing simulation and the Quasi-Monte Carlo method. The discussions identified several potential opportunities for future collaboration between the two research groups.
  • Technical Seminar (February 26, 2026): Professor Sun delivered a presentation hosted by the SPWLA KAUST Student Chapter. His talk, titled “Thermodynamically Consistent Numerical Modeling for Multiphase/Multicomponent Flow in Deformable Porous Media,” introduced novel numerical methods designed to address challenges in modeling multicomponent gas flow in poroelastic media and immiscible two-phase flow in poro-viscoelastic media.
