Professor Mustafa Onur, Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Tulsa, visited King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) as part of an academic exchange with the Deep Geoenergy Engineering and Modeling (DGyM) research group.
Academic Activities During the Visit
During his visit, Prof. Onur participated in several academic and research activities that strengthened collaboration between KAUST and the University of Tulsa.
Visit to GEMS Platform Facilities
Prof. Onur toured the Geoenergy and Mineral Resources (GEMS) Platform research facilities and laboratories, where he was introduced to ongoing experimental and computational capabilities supporting subsurface energy research at KAUST.
Thesis Defense Participation
Prof. Onur served as the external examiner for the Ph.D. defense of Billal Aslam (DGYM, ESSE), providing expert evaluation and feedback on the dissertation titled “Hybrid Physics–Data-Driven Reduced Modeling for Reservoir Simulation.”

Graduate Seminar and TUPREP Consortium Introduction
Prof. Onur delivered a graduate seminar for ESSE students titled “High-Fidelity- and Machine Learning-Based Life-Cycle Reservoir Production Optimization Methods for Subsurface Energy Reservoirs.”
In the seminar, he introduced the University of Tulsa Petroleum Reservoir Exploitation Projects (TUPREP) consortium, and then discussed advanced optimization strategies combining high-fidelity simulation and machine learning and introduced the University of Tulsa Petroleum Reservoir Exploitation Projects (TUPREP) consortium, highlighting opportunities for collaborative research and industry engagement.
Research Discussion with DGyM Group
The visit concluded with in-depth research discussions during the DGyM’s regular biweekly meeting, where Prof. Onur exchanged ideas with group members on reservoir simulation, optimization, and deep learning approaches.
