We are delighted to announce that Zhilei Han, a PhD student in DGYM research group, who attended the InterPore Annual Conference 2024 held on May 13–16 in Qingdao, China, has now received the prestigious Invited Student Paper Award.
This award is highly competitive, with only nine student recipients selected annually based on scientific merit, impact, originality, and clarity of presentation.
Zhilei’s work was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Bicheng Yan and collaboration with Dr. Zeeshan Tariq, reflecting a successful collaboration within our team.

Additionally, as part of this recognition, the research has been invited for publication in the InterPore Journal, with the article expected to be published in August 2025.
Brief description of the work:
To accelerate the optimization of well controls (e.g., cycling schedule, rates, cushion gas type) under reservoir uncertainty during Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS), we propose a stochastic optimization framework combining compositional reservoir simulation, deep learning-based surrogate modeling, and genetic algorithm optimization. A detailed base model was developed to capture key processes, such as compositional fluid flow, microbial methanogenesis, gravity segregation, and capillarity. CNN-BiLSTM-Attention surrogate models were then trained on an extensive dataset generated from reservoir simulations. These trained models were integrated into a genetic algorithm to maximize net present value (NPV). Results demonstrate high prediction accuracy and efficiency, offering a practical tool for optimizing UHS design and operation.
