2025/05 Congratulations to Haidar Ali Al Ahmad and Huseyn Yusifov for Successfully Defending Their MS Thesis

14 May, 2025

We are pleased to announce that two MS candidates from the DGYM research group, Haidar Ali Al Ahmad and Huseyn Yusifov, have successfully defended their master's thesis in the Energy Resources and Petroleum Engineering program at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Haidar was co-supervised by Professors Bicheng Yan and Hussein Hoteit, defended on May 8th; Huseyn was supervised by Professor Bicheng Yan, defended on May 14th. Their committee board include Professor Tariq Alkhalifa, Professor Hussein Hoteit, and Professor Bicheng Yan.

Haidar Ali Al Ahmad's thesis, titled "Analytical and Numerical Investigation of Brine Leakage from Saline Aquifers in Faulted Carbon Storage Systems," developed innovative mathematical formulations to quantify leakage rates and pressure changes in subsurface systems with abandoned wells and faults across multiple geological layers. His research provides valuable tools for safety assessment of geological carbon storage projects, addressing critical challenges in CO₂ sequestration technology.

Huseyn Yusifov's thesis, "Automatic Differentiation Supported Geothermal Reservoir Simulator Development," focused on creating a high-performance geothermal reservoir simulator (GYMS) using the Julia programming language enhanced with Automatic Differentiation techniques. His simulator has been successfully validated against established industry standards and applied to various complex geological conditions, offering robust technical support for geothermal energy development in Saudi Arabia.
